Maya Deren - At Land

I went to the exhiition a couple of weeks ago and there were outtakes of
Maya Deren and Marcel Duchamp's film,
I decided to try look them up on youtube and came across
this little gem. Although it's not really meant to make sense
I think it relates to my project quite well, She looks like she
is some magical creature that came from the sea.

I have access to a camera again, so here you go

For Miss Webber and her book.

Well after multiple attempts of uploading the image to facebook for you and it deciding to invert the colours I thought I'd try and upload it here to see whether it was just facebook being rubbish or whether I have just done something strange to the file...(it comes up perfectly fine as a file on my computer...hmm).

Brick Lane Girl

Turns out it is just facebook being rubbish...! Is this style okay and do you want colour? Because I have it in black and white also if you don't. I just filled it in using photoshop colour, I'm not used to it as I do black and white usually but I think it looks nice in colour. If you send me your email I can give you the propper file.

Imagine

Okay so I have 5 weeks, and in this 5 weeks I need to DRAW DRAW DRAW/Sculpt? Well, after dragging 12.5Kg back to the shop because I got the wrong clay, we'll see when I get the 'right' clay...

I finally sat down and finished the illustration that I started, I could probably add more forever, but I have put my foot down, stopping, and going to start a new one. If when I've done some new ones I look at it and think it needs something else I'll do it then but for now I'm calling it done.

I really wanted to put a photo up because I'm actually quite proud of it, usually I end up hating stuff I do, but my boyfriend has gone on tour and taken the camera...so I can't show 'you' properly.

In the meantime, have some photos from my cackberry  camera, to get the idea of the shape and what I've added, and IMAGINE those lines are like the ones in the photos in the previous post ;)

An idea of the shape...

I added a bird claw with hair draped over (continued from the Siren up top) and some plant stuff...

On the right hand side I added a branch with bits of leaves etc...

I will put better photos up once I get the camera!!!

It seems sort of strange that I now have to start from scratch on a new drawing.

Preview of unfinished work

I haven't updated this for a while but here are a few photos of the type of work I am making (unfinished).
This is an evolved version of something I posted previously. They are slightly blurry in places because the camera decided to focus on certain areas...(I'm not a photographer)...but they are too big to scan:

Progress

I had a tutorial in real life for the first time in ages, which has made me more happy with what I am doing. As I have to have a 'reason' to be doing what I'm doing that is related to fashion it's a bit annoying; I was originally thinking of picking a brand/designer and doing my illustrations for them and creating branding materials/wallpapers etc all sorts but I couldn't find one that I thought suited my style.

Gareth Pugh's newest collection was the closest I found, but whereas the thought behind his collection fitted in exactly,

("He said he wanted his women to look strong, but they looked stiff in light of what was to come...They had the drama that the designer's fans expect, but they were an evolution of the softer, more romantic mood he initiated for Spring. Pugh accessorized the collection with men in outfits that were designed to emphasize masculine vulnerability in the face of feminine strength." Tim Blanks, style.com)

I was unsure whether my illustration style fitted with him, but with the help of one of my tutors I've now decided that the link to fashion will be that it is intended for a magazine such as 'Fashion Tale' which is an online magazine (couldn't find it in R.D Franks...So I'm assuming it's not in print). The issues all seem to vary from being very photography based or very illustration based; issue 2 which you can see here is all illustration which is really inspiring in this day and age you mainly see fashion magazines full of photography. The illustration styles are also really diverse too and here are some screen shots of pages from the magazine where you can see the styles are all really different but seem to work well together in the same publication. They include illustrations with just a few quick strong lines, to some really intricate work.

I think my illustrations would be able to sit in this magazine comfortably without me changing the way I'm drawing and my tutor said that this is a better way to go because I have an interesting illustration project developing and don't want to compromise it by trying to work in a style for someone else, which I am perfectly happy about! There are two routes that I could go down, promoting the fashion, which is what I was previously going to do, but then also there is the kind of 'trend' illustration. Forward looking, taking inspiration and adding your own creating something new and hopefully influential and inspiring. Thats what I will aim at...I've taken inspiration I've collected for the past 6 months from everything from holidays, museums and exhibitions, general walking around and the occasional fashion show, and adding my own spin on it to create a new narrative.

Also, I finally have some nice paper to work on! Thankyou Falkiners... my purse doesn't like you much though. Was really looking forward to testing that out then realised that because the paper had been rolled up I would need to wait until it was flat...Should have done that last night, oops!

Mixed Media

Mixed Media: Oil paint and white spirit, watercolour, drawing ink, fountain pen and fineliner! When stretching the paper the top tape came off hence the wrinkles...Also was slightly larger than A4 to fit on the scanner and I need to trim it. Playing around with the different media to see how they look together.

Fountain Pen Drawing

I think most of what you will see me post now, drawing-wise, will be me experimenting leading up to my final pieces for uni. I quite like this as an idea, the tree is inspired by the Cambodia Tree Temple and under the tree roots i blended in female figures with their hair entwining into the tree and becoming part of the roots. I made one kind of half bird (bottom left) like a Siren and above her is some Belladonna flower (Deadly Nightshade). (Similar theme to the Siren). There are also some Lily's and Lotus flowers. Femininity...mother nature etc etc...I dunno this will go somewhere eventually.

Life Drawing 02

I can't seem to find a setting that lets you click on the photo to make it bigger so some photo's are of the same thing just a bit closer...

Life Drawing 01

In a previous post, I mentioned that I would upload photos when I got the camera lead, so here we are; my first 'life drawing' session in over 3 years, eeek! Thought I would post them and hopefully we will see me get better as the time goes on...

I want to make her hair into a tree and have roots everywhere.

Hobby

It's been a long time since I've been able to say I have a 'hobby', a real hobby. Thanks to my boyfriend's persistent 'I want to swing dance again' comments I enrolled us on a Jive dancing course for his birthday. Beginners of course because I have never attempted anything like it, the most dancing I've done is tap and ballet when I was very young. After today we are now 5 lessons in and I actually love it, it's so fun! I was a bit sceptical at first and thought I would just be embarressed but not at all. I must admit I had a glass of wine before the first lesson, but it was completely fine. We are half way through the course and it's actually looking like we're dancing, hoorah! 5 more weeks left, then the next course starts - Lindy hop. Think we are going to try that out after!

Loss of a Legend

One of the most talented and innovative designers, Alexander McQueen, found dead this morning. I can't believe it. True shock. He has been an inspiration to me since Secondary School, all through College, and still.

When I saw the facebook status. 'Alexander McQueen...Suicide! What!' I thought it must have been some kind of awful joke. But after a quick google search it appeared that it was true.

Such a shame. His last collection was in my opinion one of his greatest. So beautiful. It is a strange time to happen with Fashion Week just around the corner. I just can't believe it.

This is a statement from his Office:

"On behalf of Lee McQueen's family, Alexander McQueen today announces the tragic news that Lee McQueen, the founder and designer of the Alexander McQueen brand has been found dead at his home.

"At this stage it is inappropriate to comment on this tragic news beyond saying that we are devastated and are sharing a sense of shock and grief with Lee's family.

"Lee's family has asked for privacy in order to come to terms with this terrible news and we hope the media will respect this....The death is being treated as non-suspicious." This was taken from BBC News and you can read the whole article Here. R.I.P Lee McQueen.

Food Face

I spent some of today doing life drawing, I need to get better and do more drawing! I will post pictures when I get the camera lead, they're not the best but hopefully will be able to see the progress as I do more.

I can't sleep and have ended up deciding that after I graduate I am going to spend my time knitting foods like this:

Whilst Adrian is driving us around in our future camper van on our American/Canadian amazing road trip that we want to do, we could end up with a bit of a knit food overload! Seems like the perfect past time that won't take up a lot of space! (Depending on how many food friends I end up knitting of course!) All I want to do at the moment is graduate and save up to go, but in reality I need to focus on the now and pass my degree. I can't help but get carried away with google though and picking out my dream camper van and accessories. There are some seriously cute ones out there. My favourite interior that I have found is from a caravan called 'Constance' -

How adorable?! My dream camper would indeed be decked out in Cath Kidson, but alas it will probably look more like this... Sad times!

I'm sure I have more important things to fit in my suitcase and bag than Cath Kidson accessories and lots of cushions, (or not), but I guess we will have to see how much money we manage to save up and go from there. I actually bookmarked a website that I found very reasonably priced campers on, far better than ebay, so nearer the time definitely going to be checking that out again! But if we're going to be living in it for a long while I would quite like it to be homely :)
